Our biannual newsletter, Garden Gazette, is distributed to our clients and friends.

Views From Linden Hill Gardens

Here it is January already and our crews are still planting.  It was great to have the season extended by the mild weather.  On January 8th I even saw Daffodils blooming in Upper Bucks; but I’m sure the cold weather is on its way.

I was fortunate to be able to travel to many trade shows looking for new goodies for your gardens.  As a little sneak peek, I would to invite you to a ‘Horticultural Chat Room’ at Linden Hill this February, please see inside newsletter for more information.

Cindi and I were able to visit and take a tour of the Heronswood garden in Doylestown with George Ball and Grace Romano.  We also attended a lecture by Dale Hendricks of North Creek Nursery. If you get a chance take the tour, the gardens are lovely and the sculptures are very interesting.

I would like to thank our staff for another great year, our Foreman Randy, Ryan, Alex and Derek out did themselves this year.  Congrats to Cindi Sathra who was promoted to General Manager.

A big thank you to all our clients, I look forward to serving our loyal clients and new clients in 2007.

As the stack of new plant catalogs grows on my desk, I look forward to the quiet of winter to examine them closely. Even as the cold of winter approaches, spring is not far away.

Sincerely,

Cutting Edge 2007

Hydrangea quercifolia ‘Little Honey’
In spring this Oakleaf starts with brilliant gold leaves; the color remains well into summer then darkening to chartreuse and into green just as the large 6 to 8 inch white blooms begin to bloom.  With the cold of autumn the leaves turn a brilliant scarlet color, even the stems turn red.  At just 4 feet tall and 3 feet wide ‘Little Honey’ is great for many different areas.
Zones 5-9     Full sun to partial shade

Cercis canadensis ‘Hearts of Gold’
This new variety of Redbud will brighten even a gray day.  The new heart shaped leaves emerge red then turn to gold; where leaves are shaded they will turn green.  Early spring color with its lavender-purple blooms.  A US native this tree will reach 15 feet tall with a spread up to 18 feet.
Zones 5-9     Full sun to partial shade

Helleborus x hybridus ‘Heronswood Double’
As with all Hellebores the flowers arrive in early to mid spring, and are extremely long lasting.  This new strain offers double the petals and at 3 inches is quite large.  Colors range from shades of purple and pink to white.  Plant size is approximately 12 inches tall and over time will spread into wonderful show stopping colonies.  Prefer well drained and well enriched soil in partial to full shade.
Zones 5-8

2007 Perennial Plant Association – Plant of the Year

Nepeta ‘Walker's Low’ – Well it finally happened, after years of Jerry’s campaigning, his ‘signature’ plant has made it to the top.  During early summer just a drive by Jerry Fritz Garden Design and you can see the reason it is one of Jerry’s favorites.  Its lovely long-blooming lavender-blue flowers start blooming early summer above the gray-green aromatic foliage.  Its common name is Catmint due to the aroma that tends to attract cats, but this also helps deter the deer and rabbits.  If cut back during July, you can enjoy a re-bloom in the fall.  Grows 18-24” tall, forming clumps approximately 18” across.
Zones 4-7   Full to partial sun
